Visiolink and Aarhus University Release iPad Newsletter Research Results

Readers favor familiar layouts for reading newspapers on the iPad, according to research results recently released by Visiolink in collaboration with Aarhus University. The study concluded newspapers which combine a familiar layout with online news and interactive features are most popular with iPad readers. The study also concluded the closer a digital paper resembles the printed edition, the more readers are willing to pay for the digital edition. more

Unity Media Malaysia Berhad Signs Contract with Miles 33

Unity Media Malaysia Berhad (formerly United Borneo Press Sdn Bhd), publisher of the United Daily News, a daily Chinese newspaper in East Malaysia, signed a contract with Miles 33 for publishing content on Android, Apple, mobile and desktop platforms. The system went live in February, 2013. The United Daily News is an existing Miles 33 customer. more

News Corp to Shutter The Daily News App

News Corp. has announced The Daily app will cease publication on December 15, 2012 as part of a general restructuring of the company in order to separate the publishing group from the broadcast group. In a comment on the decision published in the news release announcing the changes, Chairman Rupert Murdoch said, "From its launch, The Daily was a bold experiment in digital publishing and an amazing vehicle for innovation. Unfortunately, our experience was that we could not find a large enough audience quickly enough to convince us the business model was sustainable in the long-term." more

Toronto Star Announces Paid e-Subscriptions

The Toronto Star has announced plans to implement a paid subscription program in 2013 to provide electronic access to all stories and features on its Web site. Under the plan, print subscribers will receive free full access to site's content. As part of the program, the newspaper publisher plans to introduce new,  features including videos and interactive social media features. more

Agfa Announces System for Automating Mobile Publishing

At Graph Expo Agfa Graphics announced Arkitex Eversify, a Software-as-a-Service system for automating newspaper print content for mobile devices. The company says the system is designed specifically for newspaper publishers seeking a simple way to deliver content to smart phones or tablets. more

Quark announced today de Persgroep Publishing is using Quark Publishing Platform to publish digital versions of twelve weekly magazines, one monthly magazine, and eight newspapers with 40 regional editions. more

The Metro Tablet Edition app, a digital version of the world’s largest free newspaper and third largest newspaper in the U.K., has been named App of the Year at the 2012 Newspaper Awards in London. The contest was open to all U.K. and international newspaper apps for iPhone, Android, and iPad platforms. The app is built on PressRun’s digital publishing platform. more 

Kobo e-Store to Offer McClatchy Newspapers

Kobo has announced electronic versions of the McClatchy Company daily newspapers are now available in the Kobo store as well as a two-week free trial to any of the company’s 30 daily newspapers including the Miami Herald and its Spanish counterpart, El Nuevo Herald. Other newspapers included are the Sacramento Bee, Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Kansas City Star, Charlotte Observer, and the News and Observer. more 

Boston Globe Announces Digital Replica Version of Newspaper

The Boston Globe has introduced a digital replica edition of the printed newspaper with added interactive functionality. Available for desktops and laptops as well as tablets and mobile devices, the replica is published on BostonGlobe.com as well as the iTunes store as a standalone iPad and iPhone app and includes the sections, articles, photos, and page numbers of the printed edition. more
